DAY ONE AT THE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Hawks have seven riders racing at the British Individual Championships in the North of England this weekend and there were some outstanding performances on Day One at Sheffield and Hull. Not just good performances but two riders on the podium!!
Top of the tree was Glyn Morgan who scored 14 points in the Over-60s at Hull which earned him a three-way race-off for second and third places. He duly won this race to gain a silver medal. Not far behind was Lola Martin who scored nine points in the Under-12 Girls at Sheffield to get a bronze medal.
Three riders were in the Under-12 Boys at Sheffield, all having stepped up from Under-10s this season. A field of 17 had to be reduced to the 16 finalists by eliminating heats. Luca El-Labany made no mistake winning the first heat and he was joined in the final 16 by Austin Brailey and Frank Spauls who both qualified at the third attempt. Luca carried that form into the final where he scored 16 points and a creditable fifth place. Franks and Austin also exceeded expectations with scores of 13 and 9, finishing 6th and 12th respectively.
Mason Martin has two events over the weekend. His main aim is the Under-16s but he kept his head while more fancied riders made errors in the Junior (Under-18s). After elimination heats to get the field of 20 down to 16 Mason got through at the third attempt and then went on to score a brilliant 15 points and 5th place overall. Only a last place in his fourth ride cost him a chance of a podium place.
One rider who did find it tough was our sole representative in the Open semi-finals – Harley Hamill on his first visit to Hull. He fought hard but scored just nine points. He will back at Hull again tomorrow for his second Semi-Final to try and improve his aggregate score.
A successful day for the Hawks!!
